An article published online today in Mass Higher Tech highlights the impact that nanotechnology can and likely will have on manufacturing in New England. In fact, the Project on Emerging Nanotechnologies' Nanotechnology Map already lists Boston as the top Nano Metro, with more than 30 nanotecnology organizations in the city alone.

"New England is at the spear point of nanotech research. The National Science Foundation has funded 19 nanoscale sence and engineering centers around the country, and four of those focus specifically on nanomanufacturing. Two of those are right in New England," reports Rodney Brown, the author of the Mass Higher Tech article.

The article goes on to discuss how the standardization of nanotechnology education and nanomanufacturing processes will be a welcome component to New England industry. "Annual salaries for technicians in the growing nanomanufacturing field range from $30,000 to $50,000, making them the kind of high-value technical jobs state officials are always looking to develop in Massachusetts."

The article closes with a sizeable list of small tech corporations in Massachusetts that are working in sectors such as health care, energy, electronics, instrumentation, and materials. Perhaps, as the article suggests, nanotechnology is sparking the manufacturing renaissance in New England.
