Dr. Toby Sainsbury

Research Scientist
National Physical Laboratory

Toby Sainsbury is a Senior Research Scientist within the Materials Division at NPL and is currently conducting research concerned with packaging and protection of graphene materials and with the development of chemically functionalized graphene and analogous 2D nanosheet materials. Applications of chemically modified graphene are directed towards band-gap manipulation, sensing, catalysis and composite materials.
Biography

Toby's research over the last 15 years has focused on the synthesis and surface functionalization of nanoparticles, nanotubes, quantum dot and rod structures to create novel functional hybrid nanomaterial systems and nanocomposite systems. He has been involved with the chemical functionalization of carbon nanotube (CNTs), boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs), boron carbon nitride nanotubes (BCNNTs) and in more recent years with the surface chemistry of 2-dimensional materials; graphene, h-BN, MoS2, WS2, Bi2Te3, Bi2Se3, NbSe2. The application of these functionalized nanomaterials has been demonstrated in the development of self-assembled nanosystems, hydrogen storage and catalytic systems, sensing and diagnostic platforms and within polymer-nanocomposites.
